Machining
Wieland Chase Provides Excellent Rods for Machining
Many characteristics impact machinability for brass rod. At Wieland Chase, we monitor our brass content and measure the machinability of each alloy to ensure the best quality brass rod.
About machining and why it matters
Some brass and bronze rods are easier to machine than others. A system has been developed to rate the relative ease or difficulty of machining various metals. These ratings are called “Machinability Ratings.” Machinists use machinability ratings when they determine tool materials, feed rates, and machine speeds for cutting and grinding operations. Machinability ratings also impact the cooling system required.
“Machinability” is not an exact term, it is simply a good starting point. Its definition is “the ease with which a given material may be worked with a cutting tool.” The cutting process is effected by variables including cutting speed, dimensions of the cut, tool form, tool material, the cutting fluid, rigidity of tool holding device, and the level of tool/part impact relative to constant or intermittent contact.
When the term machining is used, it is usually referring to milling, turning, or drilling. Additional machining techniques or processes such as boring, sawing, shaping, threading, and broaching are can be utilized but are not as common as milling, turning or drilling.
Good machining options
Some of the best alloys for machining are ECO BRASS® C69300 and ECO BRONZE® C87850. These alloys are lead-free and corrosion resistant which make them an excellent solution for many of our supplier’s applications.

Our extensive brass supply and bronze supply
Wieland Chase Product Line Includes:
Standard Alloys
100% machinable, standard engineered alloy exceed industry standards, quality and consistency. Quality and consistency allows customers to produce more parts per hour from extruded hex, round, square, and/or rectangle brass bars and rods as well as maintain closer tolerances and reduce machining downtime due to longer tool life. Brass profile shapes come in hex, round, square, and/or rectangle brass bars and rods.
ECO BRASS®
ECO BRASS® is dezincification resistant, stress corrosion cracking resistant, wear-resistant and high strength.
A lead-free option with excellent machinability, forgeability and high strength equivalent to stainless steel, ECO BRASS® eliminate the problems of stress corrosion cracking and dezincification. Brass profile shapes come in hex, round, square, and/or rectangle brass bars and rods.
ECO BRONZE®
This tough bearing material is dezincification resistant, stress corrosion cracking resistant, wear-resistant and has high strength.
It is also environmentally friendly and cost effective. A great lead-free, arsenic-free and bismuth-free alternative to C93200 leaded. Bronze profile shapes come in hex, round, square, and/or rectangle brass bars and rods.
Ingot
With low melt temp, high fluidity, low drop, high strength, dezincification resistant, stress corrosion cracking resistant, ingot is a lead-free option for casting applications requiring high strength and corrosion resistance while maintaining good machinability.
It is available in hex, round, square, and/or rectangle brass bars and rods.
